Tiruchirapalli Junction
History
The Great Southern of India, a Railway Company was established in 1853 with Tiruchirappalli as its headquarters.[1] In 1859, the company constructed its first railway line that connected Tiruchirappalli with Nagapattinam.[1] Presently, Tiruchirappalli is an important railway junction in Tamil Nadu and is a separate division of the Southern Railway.
Facilities
There is a food plaza and many refreshment stalls. Rest rooms and waiting halls are available for all class of peoples. There are many food stalls and telephone booths present inside the junction. Electronic Coach position display system is available on all platforms. Platform number 6 and 7 is under gauge conversion. More over separate tracks are being built for accommodating freight carriers. Roofs are available in all platforms.

- Trichy is one of the busiest railway junctions in India.
- It is the second biggest railway station in Tamil Nadu next to Chennai Central.
- It has more than 200 trains crossing per day in its division.
- The railway station has been accredited with international standards, and development is under process.
- Electrification between Villupuram and Tiruchirapalli has been completed and electric trains are being run in this section.
- Electrification between Trichy and Madurai is in the verge of completion.
- The Junction has been given 5 stars for electricity conservation, which is one of the few stations given such.
- Golden Rock Locomotive Workshops is a firm in India that manufactures railway locomotives and other kinds of rolling stock.Its age is 75 years old and is the biggest wagon construction unit in India.
